Star San

Star San Sanitizer

Star San is definitely the homebrew sanitizer! As an acid-based, no rinse sanitizer, it is odorless and tasteless. Additionally, it is also a great way to clean out of my personal experience. I regularly use Star San to clean all my equipment after a brew day, and it works extremely well even on the toughest stains. Let it soak for a moment and all comes off. While as an actual cleaner, PBW is by far the better option big picture, from a day to day perspective, I’ve found Star San to do rather well, too.

The key importance is to dilute the concentrated solution in the mixture of 1oz Star San to 5 gallons of water, and mix well. And also remember … it foams. A LOT!

The best way I have found to deal with it is to have a spare vessel that holds 5 gallons, and store it in. Not only do I use Star San as sanitizer around brew day, but also around the and especially to keep my kegs clean (and sanitized) as well as all other draft equipment. I use a spare 5gal keg to dilute the sanitizer solution to make the measurement easy, add a little pressure and use a picnic tap to dispense as needed. Don’t even need to keep the keg hooked up to keep dispensing for a while with an initial 10psi pressure once the lead is sealed. Occasionally hook it up for a few seconds and all done.

Then get a simple spray bottle to keep it in and you’ll be all set. Just don’t forget to label it.
